Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a new initiative known as the Agricultural Tubewell Solarization Initiative. This project intends to lower farmers’ energy expenses while also promoting sustainable farming methods.
Project Details
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired a meeting on Friday morning to review the project’s major features. Farmers with up to 25 acres will be eligible for solar tubewell installation under the scheme. Farmers will only have to pay 33% of the cost, with the government covering the rest 67%.
First Phase of the Project
The project will be implemented in two phases. In the initial phase, 7,000 tube wells will be converted to solar energy. This switch will drastically lower farmers’ operating costs. Currently, running a tubewell with diesel costs roughly Rs3,000 per acre, while electricity costs around Rs1,500 per acre. However, employing solar energy will cost only Rs50 per acre, which represents a significant savings.
